HCA Healthcare (NYSE: HCA), which operates 174 hospitals, 119 freestanding surgery centers, and numerous other outpatient centers in 20 states and the United Kingdom, today announced an agreement to acquire Highlands Regional Medical Center in Sebring, Florida, from subsidiaries of Community Health Systems, Inc.
Community Health Systems, Inc. is the largest non-urban provider of healthcare services in the United States, operating more hospitals than any competitor. Community Health acquires rural hospitals that typically operate on a nonprofit basis and are struggling financially.

CHS posted better than expected results in the third quarter. The health system reported profits of $112 million, or 97 cents per diluted share, compared to a net loss of $17 million—or 15 cents per diluted share—the same time last year. Still, the health system beat analysts' expectations on revenue by $220 million.
