As if this weren't enough, the Columbia Basin is home to hundreds of contaminated waste sites—including the most polluted place in the Western Hemisphere: the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Studies on Columbia River resident fish, otters, bald eagles, and other species reveal the heavy toll of toxic pollution.
With an average flow at the mouth of about 265,000 cubic feet per second (7,500 m3/s), the Columbia is the largest river by discharge flowing into the Pacific from the Americas and is the fourth-largest by volume in the US.

The legal limit for Columbia water temperature is 68 degrees to protect salmon and steelhead in the mainstem of the river (it's lower in tributaries and spawning grounds).
What is the source of the Columbia River?
Columbia River, largest river flowing into the Pacific Ocean from North America. It is exceeded in discharge on the continent only by the Mississippi, St. Lawrence, and Mackenzie rivers.
Between 17 million and 6 million years ago, huge outpourings of flood basalt lava covered the Columbia River Plateau and forced the lower Columbia into its present course. The modern Cascade Range began to uplift 5 to 4 million years ago.
Large ocean going vessels can traverse the Columbia River all the way to Vancouver, Washington and smaller vessels can go another 200 or so miles, but must go through a series of locks.
“There is a chance it could be a small great white shark.” Mattes said the size, brownish coloration on the dorsal fin and general tail shape lead her to believe it's likely a salmon shark. Both kinds of sharks live off the Oregon coast, according to ODFW spokesman Rick Hargrave.

We all have the right to swim, fish, kayak, windsurf, kiteboard, and boat on the Columbia. Unfortunately, in some stretches of the river, toxic pollution and unsafe bacteria levels make doing so unsafe. Much of the Columbia River is safe for swimming, but use caution.
The navigable channel depth is kept at 40 feet as far as Portland and at 27 feet between Portland and Bonneville Locks. Depths to 300 feet have been measured near The Dalles, Oreg., and to 200 feet in lower river and estuary.
Perhaps the most well-known waterfall in western Oregon, Multnomah Falls is viewable in its entirety from below. Park in the neighboring lot, and walk to the base and enjoy a cup of coffee while you take in the view.
A pressure differential across the Cascades makes air want to flow from one side of the gap to the other to equalize that difference. So, you get air moving from one end of the Gorge to the other. That's wind.
But there is one feature that makes this beautiful natural area truly unique: the amazing waterfalls. In fact, there are so many amazing waterfalls – 90 on the Oregon side of the river alone – that the Columbia River Gorge is considered to have the highest concentration of waterfalls in the entire country!
The depth of the Columbia River channel is shallow compared to that of the Pacific Ocean. The bar becomes more dangerous during ebb tide because the outward flow of water from the Columbia River is increased by the outward flow of ocean waters due to the tide.
In months when the Columbia River is at its lowest flows — generally fall, winter and summer — salinity will intrude as far up the river as 170 kilometers (about 106 miles), all the way to the Willamette River in the worst case scenario (1.77 meter sea level rise).
According to Doug Levin, director of the Earth Mapping Laboratory at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Pocomoke River is the deepest river in the United States. The deepest river/gorge in the United States is Hells Canyon along the border of Oregon and Idaho. It's 6000 feet deep!
New advisories from health officials in Washington and Oregon warn that some fish in the Columbia River aren't safe to eat. The warnings do not apply to ocean-going fish like salmon and steelhead. And in the rest of that watery span, they recommend no more than one serving of fish per week because of mercury.

The Columbia River Gorge formation started approximately 40-60 million years ago. The granite from within the earth was lifted up from the pressure of molten lava from inside the earth which caused the outline of the Columbia Basin.
From Portland, you can either take the Historic Columbia River Highway or I-84 to reach Multnomah Falls. Although the waterfall is off the Historic Columbia River Highway, parking is limited to a few parking spots. Once Multnomah Falls became popular, parking was expanded, but can only be accessed from I-84.
