California topped the list, followed by Oregon and Washington. Los Angeles is the city with the worst ozone pollution — LA has topped that list in 19 of the last 20 of these reports.

To limit pollution in the home, follow these recommendations:
- Consider purchasing an indoor air purifier.
- Avoid air fresheners and candles.
- Keep filters on air conditioners and heaters clean.
- Vacuum often.
- Wash sheets and stuffed toys to get rid of dust mites.
- Wash mold and mildew off hard surfaces.
To test the air quality in your home, purchase an air quality monitor to check the levels of dust, allergens, chemical pollutants, and humidity in your home. Additionally, install carbon monoxide detectors on every floor to alert you to high levels of carbon monoxide.
10 Tips to Protect Yourself from Unhealthy Air
- Check daily air pollution forecasts in your area.
- Avoid exercising outdoors when pollution levels are high.
- Always avoid exercising near high-traffic areas.
- Use less energy in your home.
- Encourage your child's school to reduce exposure to school bus emissions.
- Walk, bike or carpool.
- Don't burn wood or trash.
"Good" AQI is 0 to 50. Air quality is considered satisfactory, and air pollution poses little or no risk. "Moderate" AQI is 51 to 100. Air quality is acceptable; however, for some pollutants there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people.
Usually, it is calculated based on five major air pollutants such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, and ground-level ozone. There are standards set for each of the air pollutants. Depending on the amount of these pollutants in the air, the air quality is divided into six levels.
Japan's Pollution Diet. Today, Japanese cities are among the world's least polluted, according to the World Health Organization. Japan's environmental record is hardly spotless, but the country rightly prides itself on blue skies, Prius taxis and mandatory recycling.
According to the American Lung Association's recent "State of the Air 2017" report, California is a leader in air pollution among other states, with the highest ozone levels. Salinas, California is the only city of California that reports no days of unhealthy air quality.
The air is a lot cleaner now. But Los Angeles still has the worst smog in the country, according to the American Lung Association's 2018 State of the Air report. (Again, scientists call smog "ozone." But they're the same thing). Days where air quality exceeded the 2015 federal ozone standard of 0.070 ppm.
California Beach Water Quality Reports. Ocean beaches are typically safer but not always safe, especially after storms and near creek mouths and storm drain outlet pipes. Always check water quality reports before you head out. The leading authority on water quality on the West Coast is the non-profit Heal The Bay.
Where Does Air Pollution Come From?
- mobile sources – such as cars, buses, planes, trucks, and trains.
- stationary sources – such as power plants, oil refineries, industrial facilities, and factories.
- area sources – such as agricultural areas, cities, and wood burning fireplaces.
- natural sources – such as wind-blown dust, wildfires, and volcanoes.

India has the world's worst air pollution: report. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and China are home to the 50 cities worldwide with the dirtiest air, new study shows.
Los Angeles is still the smoggiest US city, report says. Los Angeles retains its dubious distinction as the U.S. city with the dirtiest air, according to the American Lung Association's annual “State of the Air” report. More than 141 million Americans remain at risk from smog, according to the report.
Los Angeles air pollution. In 2013, the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Riverside area ranked the 1st most ozone-polluted city, the 4th most polluted city by annual particle pollution, and the 4th most polluted city by 24-hour particle pollution. Both ozone and particle pollution are dangerous to human health.
Smog can cause or aggravate health problems such as asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and other respiratory problems as well as eye irritation and reduced resistance to colds and lung infections. The ozone in smog also inhibits plant growth and can cause widespread damage to crops and forests.
Air Quality in Riverside
Because it travels with the wind, it can affect sparsely populated areas as well. Such is the case in Riverside and other Inland communities where due to geographic location we endure more pollutants than what we generate.Regarding safety, LA is at both extremes : while most of the touristic neighborhoods such as Hollywood, Beverly Hills or Santa Monica are safe, L.A. has some very dangerous areas downtown (Skid Row) and nearby (South Central), as well as some cities famous for gang related violence (Compton – the 4th most dangerous
Bakersfield, California remains the most polluted city in America in terms of spikes in particulate matter, with Fresno coming in second. A “spike” is defined as a day when the concentration of PM2. 5 rises above the limit set by the US Environmental Protection Agency for acceptably healthy air.

California still has the five metropolitan areas that routinely register the highest levels of ozone pollution in the nation: Los Angeles, Visalia, Bakersfield, Fresno and Sacramento.
Air pollution has been linked to higher rates of cancer, heart disease, stroke, and respiratory diseases such as asthma. In the U.S. nearly 134 million people—over 40 percent of the population—are at risk of disease and premature death because of air pollution, according to American Lung Association estimates.
In California, emissions from cars and trucks are the top source of air pollution, and the ALA report gives the Golden State failing marks when it comes to clean air. “For California, we have seven of the 10 most ozone-polluted cities in the United States, including Sacramento at No. “Sacramento is ranked No.
