It usually carries pedestrians, bicycles, automobiles, trucks, and light rail. It is used in places where spans need to be longer than cantilever bridge can achieve (because of its weight), but the span is short enough so a suspension bridge is not practical there economically.
The S-shaped Hangzhou Bay Bridge is an important connection in China's East Coast Superhighway. Starting in Jiaxing to the north, the bridge ends at Ningbo's Cixi county in the south. It shortens the ground transportation distance from Ningbo to Shanghai by 120km and travel time from four hours to two and half hours.
The structure includes 500 spans of prestressed concrete box girders over a non-navigable viaduct and two cable-stayed bridges over navigation channels. At opening, the bridge was the world's longest sea crossing, and cost $1.5 billion to construct.

The world's longest sea bridge was formally opened yesterday linking Shanghai to the industrial city of Ningbo across Hangzhou Bay in China. The 22-mile bridge will reduce the driving distance between the eastern side of Shanghai and the port town of Ningbo by 75 miles.
On June 29, 2003, the construction of the steel trestle in the shallow sea section of the first bid of the 587-meter-long Donghai Bridge was completed. On April 3, 2004, the Donghai Bridge seawall project held a closing ceremony.
