When DS asked several teachers and choreographers to define the term “groove,†we got answers like “an inner feeling of movement that you put underneath dance steps,†“being one with the music and choreography†and “the way your body interprets beats.†The groove concept can be tricky to understand.

The bassline bridges the gap between the rhythmic part played by the drummer and the melodic lines played by the lead guitarist and the chordal parts played by the rhythm guitarist and/or keyboard player.
Simply put, bass is important in music and necessary in a band because it bridges the gap between treble (guitar) and percussion (drums), providing a rhythmic and harmonic function at the same time. Despite the bass frequency's hidden and subtle sound, it plays a crucial role in a piece of music.
A good bassline does a few things.
- Establishes the chord progression.
- Supports the melody.
- Interacts with the drums.
- Adds movement to the song.
- Shows off your unique style.
In music theory, the bass note of a chord or sonority is the lowest note played or notated. If there are multiple voices it is the note played or notated in the lowest voice (the note furthest in the bass.)
A walking bass line is a more creative form of bass playing than the other swing styles because you choose new notes each time you play the same song. A walking bass line simply walks through the appropriate scale of each chord, one note per beat, hitting every beat of each measure.
Melody is a linear sequence of notes the listener hears as a single entity. The melody of a song is the foreground to the backing elements and is a combination of pitch and rhythm. Sequences of notes that comprise melody are musically satisfying and are often the most memorable part of a song.
Usually when a bass player plays a solo, it's no longer a bassline—it's a melody. During a melodic bass solo, you can toss the Note Choice Pyramid aside. During a bass solo the bass player's role has shifted from defining the chords to creating a singable melody part with few requirements and expectations.
In drum notation, the notes are written on the staff and are separated by vertical bar lines. The space between the bar lines is referred to as a “measure.†You will typically count beats while playing different notes on the drum set within each measure.
