(the higher the number, the softer and darker the pencil). A softer pencil is smudgier and harder to erase, but is good for shading and outlining. If you want a harder, lighter pencil, you're shopping in the H (hard) range - F*, H, 2H, 4H, etc. (the higher the number, the firmer and lighter the pencil).
It is true that colored pencils are hard to erase! In most cases it is usually impossible to erase down to the pure white (or whatever color) of the paper. At best, you will be able to lighten the mistake enough that you can color over it.

Dried watercolor pencil can often be lifted and erased, depending on the nature of the pigment and how staining it is. To erase such pigment, allow the surface to dry completely.
How to Correct Mistakes or Rework a Finished Colored Pencil Drawing
- Carefully remove color with an edged eraser.

You can use a rubber band.Rubber bands remove pencil matter as well as erasers do. You have to be careful what you erase and what rubber bands you use, though. You may be able to use correction fluid (a.k.a. white out).

Scrape off as much colored pencil as possible. Apply liquid dish soap and work into the stained area. Let stand a few minutes, rub fabric under warm water to remove the stain. Machine wash using the heavy soil setting and the hottest water the fabric will allow with OxiClean or Clorox 2.

The white Prismacolor Premier pencil gave better, more vibrant white coverage over grayscale than the Faber Castell Polychromos white did.. It isn't a huge difference but for me it's definitely enough that I will lean towards using the white Prisma when I need white over grayscale.
