Rock is Mexican listeners' preferred genre, followed by pop and Latin pop. Regional Mexican music came in fourth in listener preferences, and reggaeton was No. 8 on the list of top ten preferences (with metal coming in at number 10).
Paella is perhaps the most famous Spanish dish of all, and certainly one of the most abused. Authentic paella originates from the region around Valencia, and comes in two varieties: Paella Valenciana, with rabbit and chicken; and seafood paella.
Salsa is one of the most popular Latin music genres in the entire world. This vibrant rhythm is the result of several musical influences, which include traditional beats from Cuba and Puerto Rico and other styles such as mambo and Latin boogaloo. Salsa owes its names to this amazing combination of sounds.
Latin Pop. As in most societies, young Spaniards love British and American pop music. But over the decades, artists from Spain and Latin America have created a more contemporary form of music, Latin pop, which incorporates rock and pop beats and traditional styles such as flamenco, cumbia, tango and merengue.
It should come as no surprise that Latin music has become so popular over the decades and even more so in recent years. The musical style appeals to people of all ages and backgrounds because of its rhythmic beats and catchy upbeat vibe. It has never mattered if the lyrics were in English, Spanish or both.
Due to its highly syncretic nature, Latin American music encompasses a wide variety of styles, including influential genres such as cumbia, bachata, bossa nova, merengue, rumba, salsa, samba, son, and tango.
Here are some of the traditional instruments that are commonly used in this region.
- Pandeiro. This instrument resembles a tambourine.
- Conga. With its origins from Cuba, this single-headed drum commonly comes in a set of two.
- Güiro.

- Maracas.
- Clave.
- El Tres.
- La Marimba.
The Latin American way of music has the characteristic of syncopation that makes it sound so jubilant and vibrant. The syncopated rhythm, which can be observed in genres like Jazz and Funk, is found on the weaker beats instead of stronger ones. The rhythm of Latin American music is heavily inspired from African beats.
What is Bachata and Where did it Come From? Bachata had a later start in the music industry that began in the first part of the 20th century. A mixture of bolero (a slow tempo Latin music) and African elements that originated in the Dominican Republic.
Reggae en Español spread from mainland South American Caribbean from Venezuela and Guyana to the rest of South America. It does not have any specific characteristics other than being sung in Spanish, usually by artists of Latin American origin.
Reggaeton blends Jamaican music influences of reggae and dancehall with those of Latin America, such as bomba and plena, as well as that of hip hop. The music is also combined with rapping (generally) in Spanish.
Music can be divided into genres in varying ways, such as popular music and art music, or religious music and secular music. The artistic nature of music means that these classifications are often subjective and controversial, and some genres may overlap.
In his new book, The World in Six Songs, cognitive psychologist and former record producer Daniel Levitin argues that all music, from orchestral classics to thrash metal and tribal dance, can be grouped into just six categories: friendship, joy, comfort, knowledge, ritual and love.
