Based on these numbers, a mother receiving the maximum amount of EI, will get $28,650 over the span of 12 months or $29,579 over 18 months. So, if you opt to take an 18 month parental leave, you will need to be prepared to receive $229 less per week at maximum earnings than with the 12 month option.
Or this: during the fifteen weeks maternity leave, you can't earn any money. But once maternity leave is over and parental leave starts, the parent on leave is allowed to earn up to $50 per week, or 25% of their weekly EI benefit, whichever is higher.

If you told your employer you want start maternity leave the day after your baby's born, you do not need to change anything. If you want to start your maternity leave early, you can ask your employer. If you have a partner, their paternity leave starts when the baby is born.
The furlough scheme does not affect any existing employment rights. The government clarified on 24 April that being on furlough will not impact your eligibility for Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP), Statutory Paternity Pay (SPP), Statutory Adoption Pay (SAP), Shared Parental Pay (ShPP) or Maternity Allowance (MA).
