Tracking Exercise is Now Easier with SmartTrack
Tracking workouts on Fitbit Surge and Fitbit Charge HR is easier and smarter than ever thanks to a new feature called SmartTrack. Now your tracker will automatically recognize that you've done an exercise, identify the type of activity, and record it in the Fitbit app.Fitbit uses a 3-axis accelerometer along with a step counting algorithm to keep track of your steps and other movements. When worn on your body, the accelerometer converts your physical movements into digital measurements.
From the Fitbit app dashboard, tap the Exercise tile. Tap the exercise you want to edit or delete. To edit the type of exercise (for example, to change a walk to a hike), choose a different exercise type and confirm your change.
An average person has a stride length of approximately 2.1 to 2.5 feet. That means that it takes over 2,000 steps to walk one mile; and 10,000 steps would be almost 5 miles. A sedentary person may only average 1,000 to 3,000 steps a day. For these people adding steps has many health benefits.
How do I turn on GPS for an exercise on my Fitbit device?
- Open the Exercise app. and swipe to find the exercise you want to track.
- Swipe up, and make sure Use Phone GPS is On.
- Press the button to return to the activity screen.
The Inspire doesn't have built-in GPS, which means the Ionic smartwatch is the only Fitbit that can be used without a phone to track outdoor runs and bike rides. After selecting Run from the Exercise menu, the Inspire locks onto your phone's GPS signal quickly. You then press play to hit the ground running.
Access Your Mobile Phone's Step Count Data
In the Fitbit app, for example, add Fitbit MobileTrack as a device. This will allow the app to use your phone's built-in accelerometer chip and display its data. Go to Account, Set Up Device, and select MobileTrack. Other brands of fitness trackers may have a similar feature.To track runs automatically:
- On your device, open the Exercise app > Run.
- Tap the gear icon in the top left.
- Find Run Detect and change the setting to On.
- Find GPS and change the setting to On.
- Press the back button to return to the exercise screen.
Can I reorder the exercise shortcuts on my Fitbit device?
- Tap the Today tab. > your profile picture > your device image.
- Tap Exercise Shortcuts and make your changes: Tap + Exercise Shortcut to add an exercise.

Customize your exercise shortcuts on the Fitbit app to include "Weights" as one of the Exercise options on your Fitbit Blaze, Fitbit Charge 2, Fitbit Ionic, or Fitbit Versa. You can also manually log the duration of your strength-training workout directly in the app.- Go int your Fitbit dashboard.

- Click on the picture of the Fitbit you want to edit this on.
- Look for the option about automatic recognition and click on.

- Click on Save and the bottom of the page and then sync your Fitbit.
You can manually log them by doing the following from your Fitbit app:
- On the Fitbit app dashboard tap the Exercise tile to open your exercise history.
- Tap the stopwatch icon in the top right corner.
- Tap Log.
- Tap a recent activity or search for an exercise type.
- Adjust the activity details and tap Add.
Which activities does my Fitbit device track automatically? Most Fitbit devices automatically recognize and record high-movement activities through the SmartTrack feature. To start, your device recognizes activities at least 15 minutes long. to start and stop a workout.
If your Fitbit device tracks heart rate, your heart-rate data is used to calculate active minutes for non-step-based activities, such as weight lifting, yoga, and rowing. If your device doesn't track heart rate, your active minutes for these activities will be lower.
Essentially, Fitbits calculate calories burned by making an educated guess based on several known factors. With this baseline data, the Fitbit then uses the activities in which it records you engaging, factoring in your heart rate and motion, as well as activities you manually enter into your profile.
This is currently the most expensive Fitbit option, but it is the only device in the product line with a built-in GPS (the Charge 2 and Blaze can sync to your phone's GPS, but do not stand alone). The GPS will not only tell you the distance you've traveled in a day, but will also map your running route as you go.
