Updating without a direct computer connection
The classic map-on-a-screen GPS devices for cars and trucks typically update through a USB connection to your computer, but newer models such as the DriveSmart 51, and many of Garmin's sports-oriented devices for non-driving use, offer Wi-Fi connectivity as an option.Here's an easy, step-by-step guide on how to update a Garmin GPS.
- Step 1: Connect your device to your computer. Before beginning the update, you'll to connect your Garmin GPS device to a computer.
- Step 2: Install Garmin Express.
- Step 3: Access or purchase updates.
- Step 4: Disconnect your device.
Once the download begins, it may take several hours to complete. If your Garmin device needs any software updates, these will usually be installed as the map update is. While most software updates are free, there's a fee for the map updates, which may run as much as several hundred dollars.
Sometimes (depending on internet connection speed, time of day) the process could be very long. (last Garmin European map update was 3 hour download!) You have problems with your internet provider if it takes that long.
Click the myMaps tab. The currently installed maps and the available updates are listed next to each of your registered devices. NoTe: If “Free Update Available” appears next to a device, that device is eligible for a free map update. You can download the free update from myGarmin.
Before you can update your device software using the Garmin Connect Mobile app, you must have a Garmin Connect account, and you must pair the device with a compatible smartphone (Pairing Your Smartphone). When new software is available, the Garmin Connect Mobile app automatically sends the update to your device.

To check the software version of your Garmin
- Head to Settings > About.
- Here, you'll see the Unit ID (the serial number), as well as the software version (e.g. 5.70 (1517997)).
- Long press on the top button to bring up the system menus.
- Scroll down to Settings and select Start/Stop.

Open your browser, type in garmin.com/en-US/software/express and press Enter or Return. Click Download for Windows. Click the download to run it. Check that you have read the terms and conditions and click Install.Press and hold to turn the device on and off. Press to view the status page and adjust the backlight. Press to create a new lap. Press and hold to save your ride and reset the timer.
How to Master Reset Edge 520
- Turn device off.
- Hold Lap/Reset and Start/Stop.
- Press and release the power button.
- Continue to hold only Lap/Reset and Start/Stop.
- Release Lap/Reset and Start/Stop when the Garmin Logo is cleared.
- The unit will restart and clear non-vol.

Flight Stream 510 will be found in the drive labeled “USB Drive”. Erase all files on the card. Press the “Manage” tab in the File Explorer and then press “Format”. The formatting window can also be located by right-clicking the USB Drive and selecting “Format”.You can lock the touchscreen or the keys to prevent inadvertent screen touches or key presses.
- To lock the touchscreen, hold , and select Lock Screen.
- To unlock the touchscreen, hold , and select Unlock Screen.
- To lock the touchscreen and keys, hold , and select Lock Device.
To perform the master reset:
- Power device off.
- Press and hold Page/Menu, Start/Stop and Power simultaneously.
- Release buttons when the word "Garmin" disappears.
How to Master Reset Edge 520
- Turn device off.
- Hold Lap/Reset and Start/Stop.
- Press and release the power button.
- Continue to hold only Lap/Reset and Start/Stop.
- Release Lap/Reset and Start/Stop when the Garmin Logo is cleared.
- The unit will restart and clear non-vol.
We would recommend first holding down the power key for 10+ seconds to reset the device.

- The Garmin Edge 830 is the most user friendly of all the 800 series.

Garmin Edge 830
The latest in the 800 series and by far the best. There is a wealth of features and connectivity on the Edge 830, everything from Group Livetrack, incident detection, smart phone connection, physiological measurements…Garmin describes the Edge 1030 as the "ultimate GPS bike computer with navigation and connected features". It's well made and comes with an IPX7 waterproof rating.
The Edge 520 Plus was launched in 2018. It packs many of the features from the more expensive 820 and 1030 units into a unit that is the same size as the regular Edge 520. The big new feature is the integration of Garmin Cycle Maps as opposed to the more basic mapping and navigation on the first 520.
