There's one truly superior seaside town in Essex and it's not Clacton. Southend-on-Sea is trendier, cooler, has more people who live there, has more going on and has better transport links. The seafront is being regenerated and the town could become Essex's next city. The pier is longer too.

8. Thorpe Bay. Thorpe Bay is a sandy beach located in the Southend-on-Sea area of the Thames estuary by the popular resort of Thorpe Bay. The beach is located slightly over a mile to the east of Southend Pier.
Frinton on Sea is a quiet family beach destination located on the Essex Sunshine Coast. A gently shelving sandy beach noted for its cleanliness and gentility, the area places special emphasis on relaxed family fun at the seaside.
The Pier is suitable for all ages and both the walkway and Pier trains have disabled access.
Southend seafront will stay open despite fear of visitors overwhelming beaches. Council leaders say the seafront's closure has been considered but have instead urged people in the strongest possible terms to use their common sense if they visit.
Brightlingsea is a sandy beach backed by a promenade lined with colourful beach huts. Formerly an important fishing and shipbuilding area, Brightlingsea is now a haven for yachting.

Yes the church is historic, but come at high tide and do the circular walk (about 6 miles) around the sea wall via power station. Lovely sandy beaches for swimming, almost deserted. Only downside is no toilets nearby, but small price to pay for feeling like you are in a different world, away from it all! So peaceful.
Physical geography and boundaries. The ceremonial county of Essex is bounded by Kent, south of the Thames Estuary; Greater London to the south-west; Hertfordshire, broadly west of the River Lea and the Stort ; Cambridgeshire to the northwest; Suffolk broadly north of the River Stour; with the North Sea to the east.
The beach is sandy though it also has shingles and grass. There are also huts on the beach, some of them for sale. The beach is clean and lovely to run, sleep, play sports or just sit and relax.
Mersea Island is a lovely place to visit for a day at the seaside. At West Mersea the River Black Water runs into the sea and you can swim in the water whilst looking across at Bradwell-on-Sea. There are two rows of beach huts, some on the beach and then others on the grassy banks behind.

The Southend coast consists of mudflats that extend far from the shore, with a high tide depth that seldom exceeds 5.5 metres (18 ft). Large boats were unable to port near to the beach and no boats could approach at low tide.
Clacton-on-SeaFamous for its pier, amusements and arcades, Clacton is backed by the promenade and beach huts in Essex. While the area of Groyne 41 is permanently advised against, the section a few hundred yards away is safe to swim in.
Clacton-on-Sea is the largest town in the Tendring peninsula and district in Essex, eastern England, and was founded as an urban district in 1871.

Southend-On-SeaNot the whole of Southend's coastline is deemed unsafe to swim in. According to The Environmental Agency the waters at Leigh Bell Wharf beach have a poor water quality. Leigh Bell Wharf beach is a small sandy beach in the old town of Leigh-on-Sea, just to the west of Southend-on-Sea.
Leigh-on-Sea has been crowned the happiest place to live in Britain, with Farnham in Surrey in second place. Rightmove said Leigh-on-Sea scored highly for community spirit, the opportunity to develop skills, and restaurants and shops. Living in Leigh-on-Sea comes at an above-average price.
Dogs on the BeachYou can only take dogs on to our beaches between 1st October to 30th April.
The waterfront path from Bell Wharf to Chalkwell makes for a lovely stroll and has a small stretch of beach where dogs can take a dip. Birdwatchers will enjoy a visit to Two Tree Island, which is connected to the mainland by a bridge near Leigh on Sea station.

Thorney Bay beach is a small, sheltered sandy beach on Canvey Island. The beach faces into the River Thames estuary a few miles upstream from the sea. There are great views across to the Kent coast across the river and it is an ideal spot for watching the ships come and go up the Thames.
