Every computer has a specific number of memory slots on the system board. Often laptops have 2 memory slots and desktops may have more than 2. For example, if your laptop with 2 memory slots supports a maximum of 16GB of memory, you can install 2 x 8GB memory modules.
Adding RAM (Memory) to a laptop
- Gather supplies. Clear off your installation space and make sure you're working in a static-safe environment.
- Shut down your laptop computer.
- Unplug the power cable.
- Remove the battery.
- Hold the power button for 5 seconds.
- Open the case.
- Ground yourself.
- Remove existing memory modules.
Simply visit Crucial.com and use their free (and amazing) System Scanner utility. In addition to telling you the max amount of RAM your motherboard can handle, it will also tell you what type of RAM you need to buy, how many RAM sticks are already installed and if there are any empty memory slots.
When you bought your Dell Inspiron laptop, it came with enough memory to handle basic tasks. Early on, this amount of RAM is fine, but as you install more programs or try to do more things with your system, you may find the memory lacking. Luckily, all Inspiron models can also be easily updated with new RAM modules.
8GB: Typically installed in entry-level notebooks. This is fine for basic Windows gaming at lower settings, but rapidly runs out of steam. 16GB: Excellent for Windows and MacOS systems and also good for gaming, especially if it is fast RAM. 32GB: This is the sweet spot for professionals.
And the HDMI 1.4a port, USB 3.0 port, two USB 2.0 ports, Ethernet port, and SD card reader make it a highly versatile machine. Whether you're plugged in at your desk or out in the field, this laptop is a superb workhorse. If you're a heavy traveler, the Inspiron 15 5000 has a lot to offer.
