It consists of at least 3 or 4 digits at the beginning of the serial number. From 2002 to 2009 the first digit represents the year. The next two digits represent week. Starting in 2010, the first two digits represent year, and the next two digits represent week.
Flip the thermostat itself over and look for the model number, which should be printed somewhere on the back of the case. Thermostat model numbers all begin with T," "TH," "RTH" "C," or "CT." Oftentimes, there will be a "Y" in front of the model number.

A Trane Model Number is used to breakdown or differentiate one product in a series from another. Serial numbers are commonly used in many different types of trane product. Letters are sometimes used along with numbers in the coding. There is no standard format for how the letters and numbers are used.
More recently Carrier has simplified things using the first four digits of the serial number to signify the age, where the first two digits indicate the week and the third and fourth digits indicate the year of manufacture (similar to Bryant).
The first letter of the serial number denotes the year of manufacture, based on the listing below. The serial number may be noted on two lines, as below, or one line. So the āIā in the serial number above indicates the unit was manufactured in 2001.
Look on the back of your unit, and you'll find the model number listed on a silver series rating-plate located above the service valve connections. If your heat pump is geothermal, the model information should be easily found on the front of the unit.
The sequence of letters and digits in the Lennox model number reflects specific information about the unit. The figures below analyze two typical model numbers. HS26 is the Series, 060 is the Capacity, 1P (1) is the Dash Number and (P) is the Power Characteristics.
For American Standard, you should look for the 7th and 8th digit of the model number. It will be a number divisible by 6 or 12, and represents the nominal BTU of the system in thousands.
How to Find the Tons on an A/C Unit
- Find the label on your air condenser unit and look for the BTU rating and the tonnage rating. The air condenser in a split system air conditioning apparatus is the unit located outside your house.
- Divide the BTUs on the label by 12,000.
- Find the model number on your label.
To calculate the size, simply multiply the length times the width of the room or area to be cooled. Then, as a practical number, multiply that total times 25 BTU. This allows ample cooling, whether it is a rainy, moist day or a hot, sunny, humid day. Let's say the room is 12 feet wide by 15 feet long.
Go to the outside cabinet of the air conditioning system. You'll find a metal nameplate attached to it containing the system's technical specs. On most units, the nameplate is fixed to the backside of the cabinet. Near the top of the nameplate you should see the manufacturer's date as a month and year.
The approximate amount of energy used to cool a square foot of your home is roughly 25 BTUs, so multiply the number of square feet in your home by 25 to get the base BTU measurement. Third, account for high ceilings: If your home's ceiling is over 8 feet, multiply the base BTU amount by 1.25, or 25%.
Sometimes abbreviated as model or model no., a model number is a unique number given to each product made by computer hardware manufacturers. Model numbers allow manufacturers to keep track of each hardware device and identify or replace the proper part when needed.
